MG: Conventions of a Film Opening

Se7en (Fincher, 1995)

Generic horror conventions:
  • fast cutting rate
  • montage editing
  • synchronous music
  • close ups creating enigma
  • negative colours used - mainly black, white and red (usually associated with blood)
  • rhythmic music
Unique techniques used:
  • jump cuts
  • flickering shots
  • scratchy, mechanical music
  • mixture of presenting their credits - titles on their own separate screens as well as titles overlaying the action
  • font of the titles is untidy and scratchy, looks almost like scrawly handwriting

Twister (De Bont, 1996)

Generic horror conventions:
  • negative, threatening colours used - black and white.
  • titles fading in and out over a background of thick grey smoke.
  • synchronous music, wind roaring and waves crashing over slow, low strings music.
  • rural location.

Unique techniques used:
  • the title spins in like a twister, breaks away and leaves a black print on the screen overlaying rubble flying through the smoke
  • zooms into the title and fades into a long establishing shot of a threatening, industrial machine, despite the rural location.

  1. Molly, not much to analyse in this sequence. Also Twister is a thriller. Good example of animation of title though - some pertinent detail.
